1971 Spider ignition switch question

Post by georgeramos »

I found the Mirafiori article regarding rebuilding the switch which I may or may not need. My problem is the pink wire that bypasses the electrical block and goes towards the key cylinder is the one that has visibly fried insulation. Has anyone disassembled the switch to the level where that wire can be swapped? If so how? Id like to re-use the switch as I don't think it has any other issues...

Are you asking if the electrical part of the switch can be swapped? Yes, easily, it is held in by a wire ring.

No, I got that part out, the wire that runs past it down to the key area is the one I want to swap but I don't know how to dismantle the switch any further...

I never took that out. That is for the 'key in the ignition' light.

I use that switch for my radio (all the seat belt function has been disconnected), so I can have my radio on when I put my key in and not the ign on.

I have always wanted a push button ignition. Can one be installed and has anybody done it?

Yes you can leave the 2 wires disconnected. The only thing that will not work (if it was) is the key in ignition warning chime.

someone here has done it, It's easy enough, basically replicate the turn part of the ignition with a push button. Image

Having a separate start button has always puzzled me, they went from that in the 'olden days' to a convenient turn of the key and now every body want to go back?? Each to their on I guess

I have seen somebody put it in place where the cigar lighter spot is.

My '53 Studebaker Commander had the push button under the clutch pedal, so to start, you'd just push the clutch to the floor. In addition, it acted as a neutral safety switch,...

Here we are back to owner modified electrics. How many of us complain about PO modifications. Before moving to a push button start, take pity on the future owner of your car. The only reason the modern car as gone this direction is cost.

Neat!
My friend has a '59 Buick and to operate the starter one has to step on the gas! Crazy.
