Im in deep caca 1971 Spider

Post by georgeramos »

Been fiddling with wiring for days. ALL day today. been following the wiring diagram and basically moving or pulling "extra" stuff that is not in the diagram.

I added a fuse block when I first got the car which is powered directly by the battery and which has 3 relays to it, high beams, low beams and fan. So I have 12v at the block and at the relays. But somehow the ignition does not trigger the relays so I am missing something simple. I may have a bad switch or a bad regulator or both, not sure how to tell. Right now when I turn the key I have no fan (hard wired so it should spin with power), no fuel pump (I have not added a relay for this but suspect that it was somehow one of the "added" wires that I subtracted.) None of them seemed to lead to the pump however as I traced their ends. No fuses are blowing at the moment which is nice but once I achieve power we shall see. The starter cranks but lack of fuel pump power=no fuel at the moment.

So the question is if I wanted to run a wire that is "hot" when the ignition switch os in the "on" and the "run" positions, which fuse position should I run it off and is it OK to link it directly to the fuse box along with the battery "hot"?

I am confused, frustrated and quite tired so please forgive my ramblings

What started this mess was a fuse (#10) that was getting very very hot (to the point of melting if I use plastic fuse) and recently one starting blowing even with key out of ignition (#3 which included headlight circuit)

I believe fuse 9 and 10 have voltage in both "start and run" position of the ignition switch.

Not clear on the function of the relays. Take the fan circuit? Are you using the ignition switch to close the relay; power the high load fan through the relay? Or, are you using the relay to power the entire circuit including fuse protection, switch and fan?

If it is to turn on the fan continuously, I would be cautious. I doubt the fan is rated for continuous use.

? Are you using the hi/low column switch to trigger the relays?

A 71 should have a mechanical fuel pump in the engine block and not electric. Also there are very few relays on a 71. Start by getting rid of the electric fuel pump all that wiring.

The relays are like the Brown wire fix. The hi and low relays just interrupt the original circuits and are controlled by the switches. I misspoke about adding a fan relay, that one was already there. I just replaced the non working original.

I rebuilt the ignition switch, added the brown wire and installed a brand new column switch. Now the cars running but currently has no turn signals...

In addition to no turn signals is no response from the hazard switch (also points to the flasher unit or are they separate?) and the fuel gauge spikes to full.

I have no basis for this, but I want to say "ground".

I believe turn signals and hazards all use the same flasher unit.

If the center console ground got disconnected the emergency flashers won't work so I would agree on checking the grounds first. Mine is a bit of a Franken Fiat and currently if you remove the courtesy light you loose the ground on the center console which I will need to find out why as that does not seem good enough to for instance run a cigarette lighter or other high draw item from that socket.

I did remove the courtesy light somehow...

all the items that are acting strange (including the fuel gauge oddly) also run through the small flasher unit Ive discovered so Toplessexpat may be correct. I will post results

No ground pins Fuel gauge, Start with ground wires that go to the "Bottle cap" multi connector under dash left side of steering column.
