'77 Sputtering, backfiring.

1977 with SMOG system removed. Full rebuild done less than a year ago.
About a month ago I took my Fiat on a trip. On the way back the alternator bearing sort of disintegrated. I'm pretty sure I had belt tension too high on it. Nothing else seemed to be a problem.
I get the alternator repaired and put back in and now I can't keep the car running. It will start and idle, but that is about it.
When using my timing light, I noticed that the light flashes are not even. I don't know if that is caused by a fault in the timing light or if my distributor is not sending current to the spark plugs for some reason.
I've noticed that while the car is idling the engine doesn't seem to respond to the gas pedal. When I press the pedal, engine response seems to be entirely random. RPM's may go up, down, or do nothing at all. When RPM's do go up, I often have a backfire.
Anyone have any ideas why my distributor might be missing every so often or why the gas pedal has intermittent effect?

check the dizzy to make sure it isnt loose. check the cap and rotor for cracks and tight bolts. If you have a mag pickup, check the condition of the wires. Is the module connected good to the heat sink. was heat conductive paste used between the module and heat sink. If you have a vacuum advance, check the hose.
