what is this inline fuse thing on my 78?

trying to determine what this inline fuse looking thing is, what it is for, and what I replace that bullet looking thing with.

That's not a fuse, it is the water temperature gauge resister, see Bradley Artigues 1978 wiring diagrams, page 2, top center. You can find his diagrams by a Google search for "Bradley Artigue". On the 77 diagram it's listed as 32 ohms.

BTW, I don't know of anywhere you can get a replacement so I would handle that one very carefully. If the wire is detached at one end (looks like it might be?) you can solder it back on.

what does it do?
engine runs and coolant is circulating- fan comes on when it's supposed to- all with this thing broken for who knows how long.

What happens if this thing makes no connection?
I can re wrap and solder it back together, just trying to figure out it's function

It allows the temperature gauge to read correctly. It is simply a wire wound resistor. If the end is spinning then gently wind back it up and put a small dab of super glue between the end cap and the core so it won't spin damaging the winding when you screw the holder shut.
