Hi, bought my first spider (FI 1981) three months ago. PO had owned it for 15 years and had only done 6,000km's in that time.
All the rubber parts were a bit 'crispy' so, new set of tyres, changed most of the water hoses and the cam belt (no end of fun with the crank pulley nut) finally used the rope trick, worked like a charm, the tensioner looked and felt fine but when I removed it, it just fell apart in my hand.
I have not worked on cars for years, just starting to remember how much fun it can be.
I have a shop manual but there is no substitute for the information I have got from this forum.
This car is the most fun thing to drive I have ever owned.
Thanks to everyone that has posted their experiences here.
Cheers Steve

Welcome, great to see another Aussie on the site (even if you are a banana bender).
That last comment specifically posted to baffle the US forum members btw...
Love to see some photos.
