Wiring diagram for my "77 shows brown wire direct from starter to ignition.

Physically follow the brown wire from the solenoid and I think you will find a connector on the drivers side firewall with a brown, a red and possibly a black wire in it. The brown wire is from the starter solenoid to the ignition switch. This connector causes many intermittent problems.
