Ignition coil options

How different are the various 12V ignition coils? I've noticed they changed around between Marelli, Bosch, etc but in my mind they all should have the same capability.

My more specific question is would there be any reason this Bosch coil wouldn't work in my '79? Replacing a Magnetti Marelli

With HEI, which is what should be in your '79, there's supposedly a range of coil primary resistances that work "best" with those modules. Too high or too low will compromise the spark to some degree because that module like to work against a certain load. If you google it you should be able to find some guidelines for the low and high range you want to look for.

I'm using a Pertronix Flamethrower 2 canister on my '79. Can't say if its better or worse than what was there stock, but it falls in the desirable range for an HEI coil, and is reasonably priced.

IIRC I looked at the Bosch blue, and it wasn't in the optimal range of DCR for HEI. It would probably "work" through.

Several people in the Texas club had good luck wiuth the MSD Blaster2 coil used with the stock electronic ignition.

I've used a Blaster 3 and 2, and they seem to work fine, but are pretty ugly if you care about looks. I would guess the "Blaster" is just a common coil with a nice sticker. There is a Bosch coil 0 221 030 119 (commonly called "Bosch Red") that should be fine:

just on modules, has anybody had any experience/ improvement from the higher performance type units?
