turn signals not working, , hazard light button stuck in

Post by buckspet »

my 79 spiders turn signals started acting unreliable, first the right started becoming questionable, then failing completely, while the left still worked..finally both started failing. meanwhile the hazard light button has been on(pushed in..and wont release) since i purchased the car, stuck pushed in, and the hazard lights won't come on. brake lights work..headlights work both high and low,,although the low beams seem dimmer than i would like..finally with the headlights on, the alternator light comes on at idle and low rpm driving, the alt light is dim and goes out after 20mph...i know very little about electrical issues, and where i live no-one knows about these old fiats..P.S. I want (must) fix this myself...I believe if you drive "old Iron" you should be ready to expect issues BUT you must be able to fix them yourself..It is a hobby car after all.

Do a search. EZ fix. Take notes to ensure wires reconnect correctly

Fix what you know is broken first - the hazard switch. Replace it.

Then move on - the rear circuit boards likely need to be removed and cleaned up (easy). Search around here, plenty of comments on the Spider 2000 rear lamps.

Agree with Brad - my haz switch was messed up and caused similar problems with the turn signals, the rest is as he said, clean and check the grounds on the front fenders, under the dash on the driver side, and in the trunk. Also check the circuit boards, one of mine had a break in the trace on the board, I was able to solder a jumper wire across it. The haz switch is not cheap to replace, but it was worth it to not have something jammed into it all the time to make it work.

On a 75, it's the grey wire from the hazzard switch that provides +12v to the flasher relay. If you need turn signals NOW and can wait a bit on the hazzard switch, take the incoming +12v that feeds the hazard switch and jump it to the wire the feeds the turn signals. Both of these wires are plugged into the hazaard switch, I just can't comment on the colors for your year.

The way hazards and signals work in this car and others is that the turn signal flashers are only powered with 12v if the hazards are OFF. once the hazards are ON, 12v no longer travels to the signal flasher, and only travels to the hazard flasher.
