Headlight angle adjustment

Post by rjkoop »

Noticed that one of my headlights is pointing far too high. What's the procedure for adjusting? I'm thinking...
- take off the bezel and I should see an adjustment screws from up/down and left/right
- drive the car about 20' from a wall and ensure on flat ground
- adjust lights to ensure they are pointing straight ahead
- adjust lights to ensure that the beam is about the height of my hood from 20' away

Does this sound about right? Did some searching on these forums and couldn't find much.

Interesting how the manual states " replace Headlight bulbs with same wattage" other wise the alternator could be over loaded and does not mention the ignition switch, headlight switch and hi/lo beam switch being overloaded and failing prematurely. I believe higher wattage contributes to all of these issues.

Owners manuals are not meant to over-complicate explanations and define possible future issues. After all, you just purchased your new Fiat, assembled with state of the art technology.

When manufactured the system was adequate for demand (okay, barely, but still adequate). You're diagnosing problems with devices and wiring made to work 20, 30 years past their expiration date.

From page 46...
Removal...Slacken 4 screws "D"
Picture above clearly shows 3 "D" screws

Hopefully this is not one of those jobs that mushrooms for you. I realized on my car headlights were pointing down and out. Thought, simple adjustment and took a look to see the prior owner had used the wrong type of screws for the adjustments on one side and mangles the locking metal ring. Not a hard job but one that takes a little patience. I had to take apart the other side to see how it should really be assembled. It all worked out well as I did the headlight relay while in there. Project creep.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!

Yep. I took off the bezels and saw the screws but they seemed very rusted and all the way in. But hopefully they can be adjusted. We'll see. Don't want project creep.

Shop manuals show how to do it, the distance of the headlight to a wall, where they should hit, etc.

K. I'll check. For now found the adjustment screws and they worked fine. So I just ensured they were pointing straight ahead and the height was about right and even between the 2 headlights.
