1978 - 95 Amp Alternator Upgrade

Post by topdownstl1978 »

My alternator pulley split in half (never seen this before). I decided to upgrade to the 95 amp version from Vick Auto. My original alternator had (2) black wires to the stud, (1) red(ish) wire to a male terminal and another wire (green, but may have been painted) on another male terminal. The new alternator has the stud for the battery connections (black wires), but only (1) male terminal. I have tried both wires one at a time. With the red wire the car will start but will not turn off and the charging light on the instrument cluster does not come on with key in on position (it did with old alternator). With the other wire the car will start but also will not turn off and no light. I do not see a charge on the battery with either wire.

Please help I only have another month or two of good driving weather. Thanks!

Just sent you the instructions that came with mine.
It took me a couple of hours total - I think I have fat fingers and had to remove some items to end up removing the external voltage regulator and cut the one wire.

Unfortunately I do not believe I have an external voltage regulator. Did you take a peek at my pics? I am afraid I have a very unique situation. I will take a look at your instructions and see where it goes.

Ok, digging through other older posts I believe my old alternator is a Bosch 65 amp w/internal regulator. It has the D+ connection, +connection, and battery post connection. I need to know what to with the wire the was on the D+ connection as I believe it controls the charging light, and interrupts the alternator field so the car will stop running.
Any ideas?

I just realized I made a mistake on original post. The new alternator I bought is 65A not 95. any help is greatly appreciated. The car is at my mechanic and I'm sure he is wanting it out of his garage soon.

What did Vick's tell you when you contacted him via his customer support link?

The email address should have been listed on your order confirmation email as:

Talked to them last week and the guy I spoke with thought I had an external regulator and sent me the instructions for that fix. They are closed on weekends so I will try them again tomorrow.

Vicks was not able to help too much, gave me a pipes things to try. I might be better off trying to locate a replacement pilly for the old alternator.

Any suggestions?

Can you post some photos. First of the split pulley because the belts pulley is two separate halves are you mistaken that for being broken?
Also it would help to actually see the alternator's connection points for the one that was removed and the one that you are trying to install.

You save the pics to your photo bucket or whatever account and then past the link in between the img block that appears when you select Img when replying. Pretty simple stuff even for this 60 year old.

Like this, select reply with quote to see details (the " icon above the message):

Possibly the nut and 2 washers that hold the pulley on and the 2 halves together came off your original one. The picture above is a re-manufactured Marelli from Advance Auto Parts for $62.39.
