Fuses

Hi, of all the complicated issues I have read here and worked through on my '82 this should be one of the easiest. Fuse A blew yesterday and the engine died. The engine turned over but just doesn't start. So I put in a spare fuse and she started like nothing had happened . When I checked the manual there doesn't seem to be any circuit on that fuse that would prevent the engine from starting. Its supposed to have things like turn signals, fuel gauge, back up lamps, stop lamps etc. Just curious to know what it is that would kill the engine like that.

Maybe a PO wired the fuel pump to that circuit.

I just worked on an 82 that was blowing fuse A an 8 amp (closest to the steering column) The car started and ran fine with the fuse blown. The fuel gauge and tach did not work as well as some of the warning indicators. The problem in the car I worked on was the fuel gauge had an internal short. Installed a used fuel gauge and all is well.

Thanks Guys, yep, the fuel gauge and tach are supposed to be on that fuse so that's good to hear. Fuel pump is a good lead too. I'll have to check it out.

My fuse in that slot was blown when I bought my car.The tac and fuel gauge and back up lights and turn signals still not working. I replaced the fuse but could not find the glass version of the 8A fuse-does that matter? Those things still are not working? Does anyone have a suggestion? I did find one black Ground wire under the dash that needs to be repaired but I don't think that could be the problem?

Hmmm not sure I'm going to find out quickly what my issue is. Fortunately the old style fuses are accessible here in Australia. I shopped through all the main stores and they couldn't help. In the end I found the local Auto store about 200 yards from my house had plenty. So I take the fuse out and she wont start, turns over happily but that's all. Something obviously connected to that circuit that shouldn't be.

Could it be that there is some safety thing in Australia with the seat belts or an anti theft alarm installed? I worked on a 1974 Spider and there was a relay the prevented the starter from engaging until the drivers seat belts were engaged. I believe that was unique to USA cars. I realize your car is turning over maybe with out that fuse the ignition coil is not getting voltage.
