turn signals went out

Post by aevansgatech »

Hey guys,

I have a strange collection of symptoms. Up until a couple weeks ago, all my lighting worked. Headlight switch worked in all three positions and the left and right turn signals worked.

Current symptoms:
1. Left and right turn signals work if the headlights are off
2. Left turn signal works if the headlights are on
3. Right turn signal only does not work if the headlights are on!

It's quite frustrating and I'm not sure where to look since it works some of the time.

Time to clean the grounds. The ones on the front fenders will impact the tail lights.

+1 on cleaning grounds. Not just the ones on the front drivers side panel but also these (passenger side Pod, under the dash pod in area of right knee, trunk pod in area of drivers side fender/wheel well. then check you battery cable for corrosion and connection to the body and battery. There are some engine/transmission grounds as well. Most electrical gremlins take time to sort out but often start with grounds.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!

Very late follow up to this, but I fixed the turn signal problem as I replaced the POs cheap turn signals and wiring with the Allison's Automotive light set.

Turns out the PO had run a very long and unnecessary wire tapping into the front left power for the front right turn signal. I noticed it because one turn signal was significantly brighter than the other. I ended up taking the ground wires out, running my own up to the nearest ground pods, and using the existing 2 power lines from the harness for the turn signals.

Now, I have two beautifully functioning turn signals, equal light output, and the flasher circuit works properly. Always nice to have something working after it starts to act up!

Next up are the wipers
