I bought the switch to replace. I will work on in on Saturday, The switch is only one piece, right? Anything I should also be buying before I try to fix it?

if it is a gauge then you have 2 sensors, one is a switch for the red light and the other is a sender for the gauge sweep.
To test them, have the ignition on then unplug the lead and connect it to ground, the lead for the light should cause the light to come on, the lead for the gauge should sweep the needle to max.
The switch does not affect the sweep of the gauge and vise-versa.

they both will be in the oil filter housing, there are a few variations but that's where they normally are
