Best local rebuilders didn't really want to do it. While looking for a rebuilt alternator, I found a new one at C Obert's for virtually the same price as a rebuilt one ($295). You have to use the pulley from your old one, but there is no core charge ($150) or core exchange. I'll let you know how it works when I get it installed.

Well, you were all right. The belt was loose, but the alternator was also also going bad. Belt has been tightned, New in-the-box alternator from C. Obert has been installed and while I was at it I did the 'Brown wire surgery'. It now is so electrified it almost glows. No more red light of doom, no more overheating, no more dangerous night driving, and the cockpit lights are so bright that they almost blind me. I also did the relay replacement and can now install halogens if I get so inclined.

Thanks for all the advice, help and for heading me in the right direction. You guys have saved me countless hours and money.
I hope someday to be able to return the favor :D

Mark,
What I cant figure out is that we told you that the alternator should not cost more than $95 from Vicks and you went ahead and bought a $260. We can only help you so far...I am sure yours will work wonderfully anyways.

Good luck

he did get a new one rather than a rebuilt unit. Often those rebuilt units are just repaired, so the new unit might last ALOT longer

I did try to have mine rebuilt here locally. but no one wanted to do it (guess I am just not persuasive enough)'. They said even if they were willing to do it, the costs of lead and copper had gone up so much that they would have to charge me $200 to 300 (don't know if this is true but that's what I was told). Even the internet sites that offered rebuilt ones were just about the same price as the new one plus the the core fee . At any rate, the new one comes with a one year warranty, and I still have my core.

I genuinely appreciate all the help. Most of all I am glad to be tooling around again with the top down and listening to the the roar of my 1608 winding up through the gears :D
