5 speed rebuild
5 speed rebuild
i am going to rebuild my transmission for my 78, i have had them apart lots of times, but am not familiar with what would be consideed mandatory, or if its just a defined by wear type of thing. has anybody done this one?
VCF,
What is it that your transmission is suffering from? Noise? Won't go into X gear? Popping out of X gear when accelerating - or decelerating? Some gears engage easily, and some with a very high effort? Lay it out for me, and I can give you a good idea just what you will need to make it right.
Synchro rings, "blocking rings", bearings, SHIFT FORKS (most common), and the input shaft assembly (pops out of, or won't go into 4th).
I raced with the 124 box for 10 years in my ITC Spider in SCCA, so I know what breaks on those boxes, and I have the setting tools for the main shaft "C" rings (available to you for a very large deposit - so I will get them back...). Talk to me.

hey thanks,my original transmission was basically destroyed as the pilot bearing ceased and killed everything. it was and has been noisy ever since, i ressurected it a few times, long story short.it's going away. irecently purchased a used one and have decided to go ahead and rebuild it befor i install it. it shifts fairly smooth and the forks don't look bad at all. and so far i haven't seen any of the brass milkshake in the oil as the sychro's go, however they may have cleaned it. i just wanted to get an idea if i should just run with it or do the rebuild now. worst case. i always have the original.
VCF,
I would just run with it. If it ain't broke..... You will need to make sure that you get a GOOD pilot bearing, it's my understanding that there are good ones, and ones that won't last around the block. Check with one of the reputable suppliers to get a good one. Bruce's, Vick's, IAP, Shadetree, Bayless, Obert's, etc.

Have you guys had good luck with Bruce's? I called to place a $350 order the other day & he was such a jerk I hung up & called I.A.P. I like supporting the little guy, but he was jerk & they were cool.E Prod Racer wrote:VCF,

Vendor bashing
Now now, lets not vendor bash!! everyone has bad days, Bruce has quality parts, IAP, are friendly but are will happly sell you crap with a smile. I have had to return items because of poor quality with IAP. (Did I type that out loud?) So do some research and be an informed buyer. WTF up with vickracing site?

Re: 5 speed rebuild
Between work, the kids and projects around the house. I almost always order all my parts online late at night, so I wouldn't know who's friendly, grumpy or whatever. I have ordered many parts from Vick's, IAP, Bruce and Bayless and have never had an problem. I will say that I have called Bruce once or twice woth a specific question and he always was eager to porvide the info I needed.

Re: 5 speed rebuild
As far as vendors goes, - and being on the other side of the world, I found Bruce's very helpful. We’d exchanged emails for about 3 weeks until I got the list/order finalized, then one phone call to confirm an ambiguous item. Goods were dispatched on time, and delivery costs were what I expected. The only other supplier I’ve deal with for new parts is Spiderpoint also OK.
I’ve also had good service for Matthew’s Spare Part for secondhand bits and pieces.
