Fuel Pump wont turn off after starting the car

Post by Jzagro »

Hello!

My 1974 Spider's fuel pump worked great over the summer, but now as spring comes along when I turn the ignition on, the fuel pump doesn't stop running! The fuel just keeps pumping and I see it enter the fuel filter and keep going. Engine won't turn over due to this (I think thats why it wont turn over at least) and I havn't had any issues with it in the past?

Could it be the solenoid? Wires shorting? Im slowly learning but this one is over my head.

If you have a electric fuel pump that is controlled by the ignition it is suppose to come on when the ignition is on and while the engine is running?

Some of the mid 70's Spiders had an electric fuel pump and a mechanical fuel pump. The electric pump only runs with the ignition switch in the "start" position. Have you done anything with the ignition switch wiring lately??

No, not recently. Should it be running always? it overflows in the fuel filter.

Does that mean it's leaking?

Fuel is suppose to flow through the fuel filter but not leak. If it leaks its a bad filter.

No, it never leaks, just gets full. It never used to get full while running. It used to just be partially full. is it normal for it to be full of gas but no leaking?
