Gas warning light

Post by Betis »

Quick question, I am trying to see if the gas reserve warning light works. When is the gas light suppose to light up? The needle is getting close to empty. How can I check if it works? And I also realized that the needle oscillates a little, is that normal?
Thanks in advance

Get a 1-2 gallon gas can
Fill it with gas
Put it in the car
Drive until the light comes or the car dies

in the trunk on top of the gas tank there is two wires
one goes to the float
the other one goes to the light
unplug one and ground it
if the gauge moves its the wrong one
if the light goes on...you got it
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

It is normal for the needle to oscillate a little, and on my car, an 80FI, which has an aftermarket float, the light comes on at about 3-4 gallons remaining, so you have about 75-100 miles remaining. Even though 3-4gals /~12gals is not anywhere near empty, the needle will still point very low. The light will flicker, too, in a hard corner.

+1 on flicker of gas light in hard corner. Make it a really hard corner and the oil light will flash on the Spider 2000 unless you have a baffle in oil pan. If you have kids drive around and have fun with the gas can method. otherwise...if you want to be logical and efficient, use the grounding method.
