Running down issues with my courtesy light on my 81; it only works when I manually use the switch. Simple right.
I know its a small thing but I see it so it bothers me and because some new sounds being installed now is the time to fix.
I found rubber door switch gaskets on the door jam switches. (that's good right)
Currently the rubber gaskets are installed BEHIND the switche, so it looks like the only ground would be the little screw that fastens the switch to the car, hmm.
Is this the correct gasket placement? Or is the rubber supposed to be on top of the switch? If the rubber is on top of switch do the lips point in or out?
Appreciate someone help on this it just does not seem that the little screw is enough ground

Behind is good. Check function of the switch and connection.

Re: Door Switch Gasket Posistion / Door Switch Ground
The switch works by grounding the negative side of the light. Yes it relies on the fixing screw to ground the switch. Also, the other side of the button needs to ground itself to the switch body when the door is open. It could be gease, dirt or paint preventing this. Get a cheap multimeter, switch it to ohms range. Place one probe on a good earth and the other probe on the wire running to the back of the door switch. When the door is closed (button pushed in), the meter should read high resistance (usually a single 0 on the display). When the door is open, the meter should read a low resistance (eg 2.2). If it shows high all the time, there is an earthing problem at the switch. Also, very important, make sure the wire from both doors does run back to the light and was not disconnected. Probably best to check this first. Again, a multimeter is good for this.

Re: Door Switch Gasket Posistion / Door Switch Ground
I also had this problem. It turned out to be 40 years of corrosion on the plated parts. I solved it by simply flicking the switches a lot, rotating the switch in position, and then just using the car (it's my daily driver). I haven't had any problems since.
Hope this helps.
