surging headlights 71 spider

Post by Budduncan »

While I seldom drive at night, after some ignition repair I seem to have gently surging headlights. It reminds me of the old generator days from the 40s and 50s, but this surge is constant and not dependent on RPM. I would have to believe the DC is varying, but if someone has experienced this problem and can suggest a solution I would appreciate it. It is not major issue and is certainly driveable, but it was not like this in the past. Alternator issue? Thanks Bud

If they are surging you may have bad cell in the battery or a failing regulator in your alternator. You really need to get a volt meter on that and see whats going on and causing the voltage to go up and down despite a steady engine speed. Most major auto parts stores will bench test the alternator for you at no charge and be able to tell you if the voltage regulator is switching off and on and not able to maintain a constant voltage.
