Battery relocation to rear quarter panel

Post by divace73 »

Hi All

I have a 1980 with the battery in the middle of the boot (trunk) and have been considering relocating to the rear quarter like the later Pinninfarina models as my car is apart at present.

Has anybody done this? The Pro I can see is extra space, the only con is there is weight in the least desirable part of the car.

Did a search but couldn't find anything, are there any pics of the rear of a late Pinninfarina models? Out of interest, where did the Jack and tool box go?
Cheers David

Not near the car right now, but the jack and tool bag live on the front wall of the spare tire well on my '83 Pininfarina

One thing to watch out for; when pushing the battery into place behind the passenger side rear tail light, be real careful the battery doesn't hit the outer body panel. It dents real easy!

don't know if it will fit but I was contemplating using the current backing plate and relocating the hole thing, hoping to avoid exactly that from happening??

I did this on a friend's 1970, bcs we converted it to FI and needed the space in the engine compartment. I welded up a holder that was then bolted in place. We used a side post battery, I'm not sure if such a thing is available outside North America. I've never seen ine in Europe.

I also relocated the battery on my '70 ~20 years ago, but at that time I put it in the right front corner of the trunk. It hung over the spare wheel compartment, but that was not a problem. I used (and use now, in the front of my '71) a battery meant for a Honda Civic, which is close to the same width, but it's only about 60% as thick as the stock battery.

Hi AFRetired

Any chance of getting the pic of the battery in the side rear quarter along with the path for the wiring?

In such a light car with only 130 lbs trunk capacity I would stick with the in the middle tight up to the back seat position like Fiat did in my 78. since I have a Diesel in mine I have the largest highest amp battery that will fit under the cover which is way too much weight to put out off to the side near the marker light. That would almost be like having a passenger sitting on the right end of the rear bumper all the time.

Sorry for the delay, here are photos of the rear right battery. That small gauge red wire goes to the center mounted stereo amp.
