I have a 1968 Fiat Spider Bertone, Chassis no. 17464, Engine no. 941904.
I worked out today that I last drove it 39 years ago.....
History of my car:
• I got the car in 1975 with 38 000 km on the clock.
• Myself and my mechanic friend converted it to right hand drive using the steering rack from its sister Fiat 850. (It may be the only RHD MK I??).
• Thereafter the car was fully functioning and I used it for the summer of 1976 and it has clocked 65 000 km.
• It had some rust on the chassis.
• In 1977 I stripped it back to the bare chassis, letting new metal in where there was rust, and resprayed it red, from its original white.
• It was fully under-sealed.
• It was covered up, disassembled, in a workshop where it has lain since. Apart from the dust, looks like it was resprayed yesterday.
• The front luggage/battery/spare wheel compartment was not resprayed. No idea why..
• The wheels brakes, suspension, and steering components are in place.
• The engine/gearbox is out.
• The doors, boot and bonnet are resprayed but not fitted. (But the doors we stored in another workshop and have some surface rust on the inside).
• The interior - seats and carpets are out.
• It needs a new roof.
• The original seats will need re-trimming.
• The wiring loom is in place.
• All the parts are available, plus many spares including a spare engine and brand new exhaust.
• I recently decided that it was time to get her back on the road. She was moved to Birmingham in March as featured as a ‘barn find’ at the Classic Car Show.
• Although she looks good from the top underneath she is very rusty from being parked for 39 years on a damp floor.
• She is now in a local garage (Loch Lomond, Scotland) having a extensive welding underneath. But will still require re-assembly...
