What are they?

Post by Ellie »

As my electrical knowledge extends only to Leggo, can anyone tell me what the two connectors are that are in the same line as the spark plugs? For example, the plugs are all in a row but (I think) between the 1st and 2nd plugs and between the 3rd and 4th plugs there are electrical connections.

This is in an '82 with EFI

That is it, the rear one is usually the one that pegs the needle if it all overheats, but either one will fit in either position I think.

One is the coolant temperature sensor for the gauge and the other is the temperature sensor for the idiot light.

No idiot light, it pegs the gauge. But a bright light as it hits some predetermined temp wouldn't be a bad idea. Might keep us from constantly and directly watching the temp gauge.

While I am information gathering, what is the grey plastic bag that is clipped to the side wall in the engine compartment? Passenger side above the front wheel and in that IA U tube clip its right there.

I was wondering why they had two temperature probes, with one that only pegs. One would think the variable one should suffice.
Well, I experienced why there are two :
I noticed on a hot day, my engine was running hot; fan wouldn't come on till 240; I was worried that there was an air lock (I had recently changed a heater coolant valve); or that water pump was failing.
I brought car home. Used infrared thermometer on engine; coolant t, etc... All the temperatures seemed normal ; seemed like my gauge was incorrect. I then remembered I had (earlier that day) removed gauge panel to clean up contacts on the 11 pin connector (intermittent dash turn indicator/and some occasional crazy tach readings). When I inspected temp gauge with car electrified , the gauge would change as I jiggled one of the connectors. Since the variable gauge is based on variable resistance, turns out I just need to clean contacts on gauge.
Conclusion: the pegging gauge is the "fail safe" to definitely indicate overheated engine
