Starter problems

Post by Henryfiat »

I have a 1979 that the starter just clicks sometimes. It then cranks after a few times of turning the key and gets a click. Have checked the connections and all seem tight. It seems to do this more often after it's been driven and warmed up good. Any suggestions on what it could be and what do you do to get the starter out.? don't see how it will come out from top or bottom without disconnecting something to make room.

it comes out the bottom. Turn the steering wheel and that will move the steering linkage to allow room for the starter to drop out. If you replace it with a gear reduction starter, you will find that installation is quite easy since the starter is smaller than the original

Using a Ratchet with a formidable extension is a huge help, and an extra set of hands makes the job relatively easy. I bought a performance starter for my car and really am happy with the purchase. Easy installation, and a fraction of the weight. I found it helpful to take a picture of starter with the cellphone before removal to help aid in rewiring process.

Before you take out the starter have you tested the "start" circuit in the car.
Have you inspected the connections behind the ignition switch. Have you measured the voltage on the red wire at the ignition switch whith the key in the "start" position. Does you car have the C31 connector about 6 inches behind the ignition switch and if it does have you inspected it for overheating?

I just put in a gear reduction starter and installed a relay - very nice. Plus the starter is lighter.

+1. Best upgrades I've done to the car, so far.
