Car seems to spark but no signal to timing light. Wont start

Post by Vkgallo »

Hello, I'm a little stumped. My car wont kick even if I spray starter fluid into the intake manifold through the throdle body flap. If I pull the wire to the distributor, and hold it near engine head, it jumps a spark. It does the same thing from the spark plug wire. However, If I hook up the timing light from the positive lead on either the coil or direct to battery and the negative side to ground, the light never shows a spark. I thought that my relatively new timing light may be broken, so hooked it up to a chevy cavalier and it worked fine. I did hook up the sensor to cylinder number 4 which is the correct one for this car.

The issue with car appears to be spark related but cant figure out why it would spark but not send a signal to the timing light. Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong?

Could be spark is too weak?

Was the engine previously running and died, or is this a rebuild? Also, have you pulled and inspected your spark plugs to see if they are fouled?

Turns out I had a short in my wiring harness to the FI system. I had so much gas going into cylinder 2 that it would not fire. Got a salvage harness and it runs good. I will be posting this to a few of my postings as a few items were caused by this.
