Flywheel step question
I had my flywheel resurfaced and the shop doing the work matched the step on the flywheel as they received it. When the new clutch kit was installed (Valeo Clutch Kit 1971 on) the clutch would not disengage properly. The flywheel step was .025" with the pressure plate surface being lower than the clutch disk surface. On this site: http://www.mirafiori.com/faq/content/clutch.html I found that the pressure plate surface should be higher than the clutch disk surface I had the flywheel resurfaced so that the pressure plate mounting surface was .018" higher than the clutch disk surface and the clutch works great. I purchased a used '79 spider flywheel from Ebay to use as a core (I am ordering a lightened flywheel) and it also had the pressure plate mounting surface lower (.020" lower than the clutch disk surface. What has changed that the flywheel step height needs to be reversed from OE specs.?

Re: Flywheel step question
Did you have trouble with the clutch releasing in all gears, or only going from first to second?

Getting into first and reverse were the worst, it was hard not to grind them when shifting from a dead stop. It was so bad that I thought I was going to bend the clutch pedal or brake the cable before the clutch would disengage. Now the clutch pedal has a great feel and you can tell right when it starts to engage and disengage.

Re: Flywheel step question
Okay, mine is a little different...only second gear, but I am pretty sure that athe same Valeo clutch I used.
See threadhttp://www.fiatspider.com/f15/viewtopic ... t&start=15
It's better once it warms up, but still not right shifting into 2nd.
Now I am wondering if I should pull he trans yet again and resurface the flywheel with the step reversed.

Re: Flywheel step question
My shifting was worse as things warmed up, I think the clutch disk was getting hot and swelling. The the tell on my clutch not disengaging was the bearing whine in my transmission. My old transmission would whine in neutral, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th with the whining getting louder as the rpm's went higher. Only when I pressed the clutch pedal to the point where I thought the pedal might break did the bearing whine stop.
