Okay need some help and direction here

Post by theranman »

Out for a Sunday drive this morning, hit my turn signal, lost all of my gauges. Check the fuse, looks good but I replaced it anyway. Still no gauges with the key on, HOWEVER, when I turn my light switch on fuel gauge starts working. ???

sounds like the turn signal switch is causing a short somewhere?

Do your Hazard lights work?? Do your brake lights work?? When you say the gauges stopped working sre you talking about their inter lights or the gauge it self. I think you mean the gauge itself because you mention the gas gauge moves iof the lights are on.

It's been a crazy week around here but now back to the Fiat! Yes I did mean the gauges themselves not the light... no hazard lights or brake lights either. However headlights tail lights and running lights are working. Anybody have any hints?

Let me amend that previous statement.. wiggled fuse I (10) and I do have hazard lights. However I have power at both sides of fuse A (1) which you would think is the culprit here... controls all the previously mentioned problems

if you wiggled the fuse and it started working that would mean that it wasnt making good contact with the contacts. A good start would be to take the fuses out and clean all the contacts which you can do with a wire brush.

Do yourself a favor and clean all electric connectors and apply dielectric grease to them before reconnecting. Clean the fuse connectors and fuse ends and use dielectric grease on the also. Don't forget the grounds.

Check the wires where they plug into the fuse box. Sometimes they come off. Ask me how I know

Thanks will do as time permits. Replaced the Flasher now I have one turn signal, front and rear, but not the other side or brake lights or gauges yet. This car has been severely molested when it comes to the wiring, and I can tell that the fuse box is new.

Despite the wiring molestations, do you have a diagram for your car. Most invaluable. Fiat also did funny things like wiring the left rear and right front running lights together as well as the right rear and left front. I would look for the loose ground as suggested. You can also start with one light at a time and check the wire colors and grounds ((clean as you go)

I do have a diagram, I've discovered already things are not always like they're supposed to be... and I'm not ashamed to admit that when trying to follow out these diagrams sometimes that induces massive headaches!
