When you go to change the oil pan gasket you will find it neccesary to loosen or remove the motor mounts and jack up the engine. Also the oil pump has to come out.Might want to save that job until after you sort out the other problem.

It's been a while since I gave an update. Had to go out of town on business.

I realized quickly that I cannot get to the car for a couple of weeks. I was asked by my wise and mechanically inclined in-laws to drain all the coolant, oil and remove the old filter. Then replace with new filter and fresh oil (Rotella 15W40). Run the engine for a few minutes and shut off (or shut off before the engine temperature reached operating range). I was told that this process will get rid of the coolant/water in the engine and prevent potential rust!

I did exactly what I was asked to do. When I pulled the oil drain plug (it was a bear), I saw about half a gallon of pure green coolant come out of the oil pan, followed by emulsified oil, and then clean oil! The oil pan had about twice the amount of fluid in it (judging from what I saw in my oil drain pan). The engine started right up, even after sitting for almost 11 days. I let it run for a few minutes and then shut it off. The engine temperature never reached 90C(190F).

Mark, why do you feel that it's not a blown head gasket? Given the amount of coolant in the oil pan do you feel that the engine block or head is cracked? If so, what can cause it?

in your prior posts you didn't indicate the signs of a blown head gasket; smoke under the hood is usually a leak. With coolant in the pan, there is definitely a failure; could be head gasket, cracked head or worse. Blown gasket is the most common. If the head gasket is blown, expect the head to be warped.
