My '79 Spider had no way retain the spare tire and no trunk board when I purchased it. This is how I solved those two problems. I made a bracket that bolts through the trunk bottom and is attached to a support plate under the trunk floor. The threaded rod is 8x1.25mm from a BMW E30 along with the wing nut and hold down washer (junk yard parts). The tires I use are General Altimax RT43 175/70R 13 on stock wheels and the width of the tire is even with the top of the tire/gastank tub. This allows the tire to also support the trunk board.
I needed a 1/2" spacer between the wheel and the hold down washer.
The trunk board is 3/8" thick and cut so the wheel wells, battery box and rear trunk panel limit the board movement. The board clears the trunklid support springs and is removed by lifting at the battery side and pulling up. There was no need to split the board. The threaded rod location was transfered and a 2 1/8" hole was cut through the board.
The retaing washer and wingnut keep the board and tire in position and the trunk board will be covered with a low nap carpet.

It looks great. The best part is that it looks original!
