A friend of mine assured me it could be done. Now he's not so sure any morenarfire wrote: You have a point there, but I know and have heard stories of people here purchasing VW vanagons in europe, touring and then selling before returning home. One would think something similar would be available here.
Definately something to sort out before comming here and being disapointed.
Well I would think this is an issue that must be sorted out before proceeding. Maybe the USA embassy here might know something. I'll contact them these days.
I thought that the registration plates stay on the car after the sale and that it was only a matter of insurance.
Maybe Snoopy would know something in the matter. If these friend were German and they made it probably there is a way.Snoopy wrote:Friends of me do this long years ago with motorbikes. Biggest problem was to sold the bikes to a good price in very short time at the end of the journey. Maybe someone help you ?
What do you say Snoopy ??? Can you ask them how they did it ??
Thx about the info on the sights in Washington DC ! Chesapeake bay must be a beautiful spot ! I wouldn't miss it

vehicle registration is left up to individual states, some require plates to be turned in upon the sale, others don't. Calif doesn't require that. As legal owner, you sign a release on the title and hand it over to the new owner. Cars get bought and sold constantly here without buyers registering them. Sometimes the paper trail gets messed up pretty well.

I think your worst problem would be selling it once you got to the other side. After that adventure you probably won't want to. (Unless you get a lemon, then maybe you'll pay someone to take it from you haha)

I ran across this old thread and then it left me hanging like a good prime time drama...did the trip ever take place?

I did coasts to coast in 9 days with a 79 automatic. It was painful....mostly because of the seats. There was also the hub i had to replace due to seized bearings. That was the worst of it actually. If anyone does it give yourself a good two weeks and you'll have a hell of a good time.
