Dual or Single Points

Post by MrBlimp »

I am about to do a tune up on my 78 Spider. I am just getting my VicksAuto order together (points, plugs, wires, rotor, cap).

The PO had eliminated a set of points. Looks like they were simply removed.

Is it worth replacing them or should I stick with the single configuration?

I am trying to determine which way to go.

The dual point setup was for emissions. If you don't still have all the emissions controls hooked up then they won't work anyway.

Why don't you move to an electronic ignition set up and be done with points once and for all? Last I checked Vicks had a very affordable new dizzy set up for electronic ignition.

The PO removed all of the emissions controls. I have no intention of replacing them. In fact, I wouldn't have bought a 78, or any other year, had it had the emissions controls.

All my vintage cars have points, and at $5.00 a pair I see them as a bargain. Plus I have never read anything that states 100% that one is better than the other.

The advantage of electronic is no adjusting fore wear. The advantage of points is low cost and easy to carry a spare.
