1995 FI engine
i have just identified the engine in my donor car as a 1995 FI motor. My question is can this engine be used with a carburetor? I would rather rebuild this engine as it looks in better shape than the 1800 that is in the car now and has a bottom end rattle.

Re: 1995 FI engine
One further question. Would I fit an electric fuel pump or fit the mechanical fuel pump from the 1800 engine. The 2000 has the place to bolt the mechanical pump on but it is blanked off.
I believe the cambelt for the 2000 has two more teeth than the 1800. So would putting an 1800 head on a 2000 block change the rotation of any of the components that it drives?

Re: 1995 FI engine
1800 head + 2000 block = 2000 belt
1800 block + 2000 head = 1800 belt
*The belt difference is made up in the height of the blocks.
Mechanical fuel pump.
Maybe/Yes you can mount the mechanical fuel pump. Your auxiliary shaft may have the drive lobe on the back for it. Although you might want to double check it. That is very dependent on the year of the 2000 engine.
*note from Weber: Electric Fuel pumps are better.
1. They stay at 3.5 psi - Mechanical units change based on your RPM thus why you needed a return line.
2. Pressure regulators for low pressure systems are never that great
3. This is a primary reason new carbs from Weber don't have return lines. It is their way of say "hey use electric fuel pumps"

Re: 1995 FI engine
Thanks Matt,
One last thing, can I use the same fuel tank or do I need to use the one I have from the FI car, and where would be the best place to mount the electric fuel pump?

Fuel Tank - Either tank is fine to use. The Carb cars draw fuel from the sending unit while the FI cars draw from a built in tube. The FI tubes that are in the tank are larger than the Carb draw lines. Minor mod with some hose reducers. Or cap of the FI built in nipples and run a Carb Sending unit. Either way it really isn't any issue at all.
Electric Fuel Pump - Low PSI pumps need to be right next to fuel source. Fiat mounted them in the trunk between the spare tire and the tank.

Re: 1995 FI engine
Thanks.
That makes sense, my MGB has one right at the side of the tank I will use a similar set up.
