New rear calipers wedge

Post by tima01864 »

I have my answer for the witness mark on the piston, Faces up to the bleeder. I installed the caliper on the rotor, the wedge is very loose, Sloppy is this normal. Any answers are appreciated.

Are the bevel washers oriented correctly? I just rebuilt my rears as one developed a leak while parked over the winter. When i disassembled them I found the bevel washers were all nested together. Neither my IAP reprint or my Other fiat manual showed their orientation. But my lousy Clymer manual shows the 5 discs back to back. If you can imagine flat washer, bevel towards it, 2 pairs of bevels facing each other.

in this orientation it was very tight getting the cross shafts over the wedge. Also the first time I assembled them I had the rod the wedge nestles in rotated 180 and could not get the piston collapsed enough to fit over the rotor. Had to remove and rotate the shaft. Again the manuals weren't clear and I didn't pay enough attention when I disassbled them.

I bought new calipers, Broke a bleeder. They were original from 1983, Have enough to do. I cleaned and painted the assembly, The shop manual from FIAT was a little confusing about the witness mark on the piston. I guess it faces up, hard to see the alignment of the tab on the pad, so going it blind. I took out the caliper spring, the t shaped stiff ones to paint. Just forgot to put them in. I rely on the forum to set it straight, The manuals do lack some critical details, Looked back on my old Haynes manual for a 1973 and nothing about that witness mark either.
