Need help on posting car photo in my profile

In trying to upload a photo (avatar) in my profile, it keeps telling me the photo is too large but I thought it would resize it automatically but I guess not. Can anyone advise me on how to do this? It also says to post the URL, but said it was invalid when I tried, what gives?

I had to enter values in the avatar dimensions. 80 x 60 seemed close for mine. The automatic sizing didn't work for me.
