Oil pressure?

Post by JKreykes »

Ok noob question here. Working on my garage find 1970 124 has not been running in 10 years. The engine turns when you turn the key I have the fuel line and coil disconnected so it wouldn’t start doing this in small steps.
The question
How soon after starting your car do you see the oil pressure gage move. Don’t really want to do any damage to it on the first start. And is there any way to prim the oil passages from sitting for so long?

Turn it by hand for a while. Or drain the oil and fill it back up so that the oil has to work itself back to the bottom. Or add a couple drops of automatic transmission fluid on the top of each piston. That will help make sure the rings are lubed while you fiddle with stuff. It will burn off quickly once you actually start the car.

The system is low pressure high volume. You'll see pressure very quickly once the car starts.
