Cabin allways hot
Hi all. I have my heater shut off but there still seems to be heat radiating from under dash. I have my heater valve sut off and ventilation shut off so this helps but if I open up the ventilation lever I get a lot of heat even if heat is turned off. Since its summer time, it gets pretty hot while driving. As far as I know, the heater valve seems to be functioning and not leaking. What can I do ?

Your water valve may be out of adjustment so that if you pull the lever all the way "closed", it is beyond closed and opening up again. Open the air vent and then try to move the water lever back in small increments and leave it for a while to see if the heat stops blowing. It took me a while to find the sweet spot where the valve was closed and the lever is not fully in the off position.

This is a new car for me and im confused. Is the heat turned on by sliding the leaver toward the front of the car or pulling it back toward back of car ? lol

According to the '76 owners manual:
The leftmost lever controls quantity of air: forward=no air; back=max volume
The center lever controls heat: forward=max heat; back=no heat
The right lever controls air split to the windshield: forward=air goes to both windshield and floor vents; back=air only goes to windshield

It is confusing. It's all about the triangle. Look at the triangle. When the lever is towards the tip of the triangle (the point end) that is off... The base (wide end) is maximum flow. You will also get a lot of heat transmitting through the transmission tunnel. You may want to insulate.

Thanks for the reply everyone ! It helped ! Is there any material in particular that would be good to help insulate the heat radiating from under the gear shift plate ?

I haven't installed any yet, so my feet just sweat, and I can't vouch for any of them yet. Do a search on the board and there are many reviews and pictures. I think I am down to Noico Sound Deadening Mat or Thermo-Tec Heat and Sound Suppressor.grasshopper wrote:Thanks for the reply everyone ! It helped ! If you insulate the trans tunnel you will notice a lot less heat. You can do this with a variety of auto products. Scrape the old stuff off and you can even consider using foil backed roofing adhesive that they sell at the home supply stores. Before you do all that, take a look at the fluid level in your trans. These trans will run hot. However, a lot of previous owners neglected maintenance and it may also run cooler if you drain and put in clean oil. GL1 non EP for the trans. You can find it at NAPA and most farm supply stores. The trans is an older style syncromesh and will run hot if low on oil or older oil.

I used an item from either Autoricambi or Vicks. It goes under shifter. It has a big foam collar that cut off all heat coming up from my shifter. Pulled all old carpet out. Cleaner off jute backing and tarry coating. Them sprayed truck bed liner. Then I glued down 1 \4" aircraft fireproof insulation . On top of that layered and aluminum backed jute padding. Finally new carpeting. So much difference in heat and noise.
