Front Brake Hose removal

Post by Zoofly »

In my "Clymer" shop manual it says to remove the front brake hose "remove the union bolt and washer that secure the hose to the caliper. Pull out the clip that secures the hose to the body bracket, detach the hose from the metal line and take out hose."

It say's nothing about needing to remove the flare nuts on the metal line. In fact, that's another paragraph which seems to have nothing to do with the brake hose removal.

Since the flare nut on my car is starting to round, it is necessary to even mess with the flare nut to remove the hose? The shop manual seems say it isn't.

Not sure i understand, Just removing the caliper or replacing the hose? Sounds like you may need a new brake line.

I want to replace the hose. The nut on the metal line is starting to "round" and it seems according to the shop manual that I can disconnect the soft line from it without needing to loosen the flare nut on the metal line.

Well, the nut on the metal line is the one threaded into the connection of the soft line. It is the one that you need to remove, but that's not explicitly stated in the manual as it's a pretty straight forward procedure.

You'll find several people that will swear by the use of the 4" locking-plier wrench (e.g. specialized Vise Grip) like this one:

It can lock onto a rounded flare nut without slipping. Don't get the larger 7" wrench by the way; it's too large.
