Job‘s and living in Vancouver

Hello to all Canadian Spideristas,

With a working holiday visa I’m moving with my girlfriend for a year to Vancouver BC and I’m wondering if anybody here can help me with some advise about the job and living situation around or in Vancouver.

I have a German master of craftsman degree in HVAC (plumbing, heating, ventilation, watersupply, environmental engineering...) and worked for 7 years in this field. Later I finished a business economists school and finished a MBA General Management in a German University.

I worked as a “Key Account Manager” in Sales for a bigger Swiss piping company and a smaller house ventilation company in the past 5 years.

I also did a lot at of restoring and mechanical work on an VW Käfer from 1969, three Miatas, two VW T3 and on my own 1980 124 Spider, a VW Passat and a few motorcycles I owned like an Triumph 955i or also older bikes from the 70s and 80s
I did everything by myself except the real painting jobs....

So... if anybody has something where I could start to work, find a place where I can fix or build my camper/van/truck (I want to buy) and where we two can live for a affordable price it would be really great to here from you

Hi Norbert.

If you have been looking at the news lately, you will see that Vancouver is one of the most expensive cities in N America. A one bedroom apt will cost you anywhere from 1200.00 ( a so so place ) to 2400.00 month. Cost of everything here is expensive. To get any kind of a decent deal, you have to start heading out of the city but still not cheap. Lot's of people needing help, job may not be that hard to find. Good luck with your adventure

Hi Norbert,

Rick is correct, cost of living is high here, particularly housing. Rental housing is also difficult to find. But there are some compensations, good skiing close, an ocean to sail on and you can play golf almost all year.

Workwise i think someone like Andritz hydro might be interested in your services given you likely speak German and English which may help. Some of the contracting companies could use your services, perhaps LEDCOR or Graham construction, both of whom work in the building sector where your expertise should apply.
One other thought is Seaspan, a local shipyard building coast guard vessels, just a thought.

Of course your visa status will be a question all will ask.

Hey,

Yeah we know... to find something affordable and adequate to live in will be the hardest part. But it could be somewhere out of the city, we have to see where the job is too.

Btw, I just finished my sailing license this year, maybe there's a way to get a boat for a few days... or work on/with one
