timing pointer without a frt cover

Post by htchevyii »

Hey guys, I want to leave the ugly yellow t/belt cover off of my '72 1608, but the timing marks are on the cover. What are you using for timing marks? I thought of using one like my 2000 and remarking the pulley, anyone have a better way? thanks

Trey, does the 1608 have the holes on the block to mount an idicator plate over the pulley like our cars have?

Hey! You did the timing cover too.
(I didn't know how to say it without using the "C" word.)

The question wasn't really answered, and since I bought my 1977 Fiat 1800 without a timing cover, I am interested in what I can do to get accurate timing. Do I need to buy a cover from someplace? If so, does anyone know of a source?

Thanks,
So Cal Mark

I've got loads of used covers, but it wouldn't be hard to fabricate a pointer and bolt it on the front of the engine

Mark, that's the reason I asked it there was the place on the front of the block to bolt on a pointer. If the two holes are there for the pointer used on the later engines it already has the "0", "5", and "10" degree marks on it. Seems to me that the pointer is a lot easier to use than the front of the cover. If the V-notch isn't on the pulley it would be easy enough to mark TDC on it.
