1608 Wrist Pin Retainer Failure
I posted up in the wanted section since it looks like my original 1608 is now an anchor. Can't seem to get picture attachments to work, otherwise I'd share some really great autopsy pix. Anyway, it looks like I need another motor so any help tracking down a rebuild-able 1608 would be appreciated.

Would love to see the autopsy pics.
Did it make any noises beforehand or just let go out of the blue one day?

When I click the link it says it "refuses (!) to connect". Failed with no warning. Just dropped a cylinder going down the road and began fogging for mosquitoes. Initially thought I had failed a head gasket.

Hot link doesn't seem to work for me and if I cut/paste the url it only shows me 1 image. Guess I don't know what I'm doing....

Re: 1608 Wrist Pin Retainer Failure
Ouch... I seem to recall that a circlip (one on each end) holds the wrist pins in place, so that must have popped out and then gotten chewed up and dragged past the piston.
I'm no expert on damage like this, but how does the wall of that particular cylinder look? Could you rebore that cylinder in the block for some oversized piston rings, put a new piston in (with maybe a new wrist pin and connecting rod), and consider it fixed?

Re: 1608 Wrist Pin Retainer Failure
I've seen this type of failure many times on CAT engines in my previous life as a field service engineer. A small piece of the wrist pin retainer breaks off and tries to beat its way out. Normally it succeeds. The cylinder wall is pretty badly hurt and looks cracked to me. Will sleeve if possible, but I'm not holding my breath. Pistons seem to be the hardest components to find. I'm looking for 9.8:1 Euro spec pistons... a rare bird indeed. You could see the pix if I could figure out how to get the frickin' image link to work....

FYI, I think piston sets almost always come with new rings and wrist pins.18Fiatsandcounting wrote:Ouch... I seem to recall that a circlip (one on each end) holds the wrist pins in place, so that must have popped out and then gotten chewed up and dragged past the piston.

@OP
Any reason why it has to be those particular pertol pushers? Is it these you are looking for:

I highlight the text under the "Direct Link" button in IMGUR, on any picture you select, then use the corresponding IMGUR "Copy" button and paste it inside of the Img brackets that appear HERE when you you hit the "Img" button that appears on the line directly above the box where writing a post. Must be exactly in between the [ ] X [ ], where I have put the "X".

Re: 1608 Wrist Pin Retainer Failure
I'll give the image thing another go. Too much like work... shouldn't be that involved. BTW, the piston set link that is posted is not for a 1608....

Once you get it, it is surprising how trivially easy it is!

It's so easy.RRoller123 wrote:Once you get it, it is surprising how trivially easy it is!
With Imgur I click on "copy" next to "BBCode" "for message boards and forums"
Then simply "paste" into your message. No need to bother with this forums "Img" buttons!
For this image I highlighted "medium thumbnail" at the bottom of the Imgr panel.
