Hello from New Zealand

Post by RitchWood »

Hello all. I’ve been slowly restoring my 68 Spider (124AS0008XXX). I bought the car in Canada in 77 and brought it with me to New Zealand when I moved here in 94. It has been off the road since 94 and then in a local (very high end) body shop called “The Surgery” for about ten years while I slowly drip-fed funds for the body work. After injecting over $45K into new metal, it is now ready for a serious cash injection :) . Things are not cheap here in New Zealand, and if you want your classic (deregistered) car to be ultimately deemed as “road worthy and registered”, it needs to be a fully documented process. The car is now (almost) ready for some paint. I have also (very slowly) been buying new parts from Autoricambi, Vickauto and Autoberry, I have a full leather interior, carpets, a GR Sonnenland cloth top, soft dashboard, centre console and radio console (everything is black). The car was originally white, but after my first restoration (in the late eighties… which included flaring the wheel wells like an Abarth) I had it painted Guards Red. However, having recently seen Michael Polito’s 67 on Petrolicious, I have been thinking that Nero might be a nice black on black option. If you haven’t seen Michael’s car, check it out here: https://petrolicious.com/articles/searc ... 124-spider I have several boxes of spare parts, as I broke down a couple of late 60’s cars for parts (they are still in the IBM PS/2 boxes I salvaged from work!). I do have the five original Cromadora CD3 mags, the Sebring mirror, and “yes” I have removed the flares, so I think it will look rather nice when finished. I did rebuild the engine when I painted it red, so it has 30 year-old “new” pistons, rings and a Webber DCD 28/32. I think that about covers it!

Hi Ritch,
first: welcome on board!
Wow, thats a long time! I got your car into the worldwide Spider registry in 11/2000!

Till now you are restoring the car? That must be a real jewel when it's roadworthy again.
Would be great to see some pics (old vs. actual).

How about Spiders in NZ? I got 35 cars listed there (you got the one and only AS in NZ).

Bye, Ralf

Hi Ralf, thanks for the welcome. I do recall registering my car on your site! Funny story... when I first registered my car there I noticed there was another one registered in Wellington, New Zealand. Turns out the other guy lives less than a kilometer from me and works in the same industry as I do! We met up to talk about our cars! He still has his, although that is after selling it... moving to America... and then returning to NZ and buying it back! My car is still a long way from being finished. If you can help me reset my password on your register I will update the text and insert a few pictures. Cheers Ritch
