smoke on startup

Post by ga.spyder »

I have noticed since I bought the car, that on start up after sitting for a few days I have a puff of oil smoke. The engine is running excellent and uses no oil between changes. It has no leaks (really!).What causes this? It only does it on initial start up ,and again only after sitting for several days. Not at all once warmed up.I am not worried ,just curious. Thanks for any feedback.

judging by what you are saying, the puff is out the tail-pipe, no?

Probably the valve guide seals are leaking at bit. Like you said, nothing to worry about until it gets worse.

My Alfa did the same thing, only it was quite a bit of smoke. Turned out to be the valve guides and I had the head rebuilt to fix it. Again, not a big deal unless it starts consuming a lot of oil.

If it's objectionable, really objectionable, you might try a bottle of Barr's stop leak and seal conditioner. I had top end startup blue smoke as well as a lot of rear main seal leakage. I'm rebuilding this winter, but figured, what the heck, might as well try it. The startup smoke and engine leaking stopped with one bottle. I'd be reluctant to use it on an otherwise-good engine, if all you have is this one problem.

Thanks for the replies. It isnt objectionable,at least not yet.It is a small puff out of the tailpipe. It is the same as when I bought it(1 1/2 years ago). I am not going to worry with it unless it gets a lot worse. As I said ,it doesnt use any oil between changes so I suspected the valvetrain. The valves havent been adjusted since I have had the car ,so that is something I will tackle in the coming months.
