Throttle / Choke sticking

Post by Braido »

Hi all,

The Throttle / Choke pull is sticking on my 76' 1800 Fiat Spider. if i play with the lever while i am driving it will bring down the rpm's or if i quickly tap the gas pedal. Any idea on how i can correct this? I took it to a garage and i guess they didn't fix it.

Thanks,

Shayne...

the 76 doesn't have a manual choke unless an earlier model carb has been installed. If that's the case pulling the choke cable would close the choke, cutting off air supply and causing an overly rich condition

Shayne, how much did they charge not to fix it?
Where are you located, I'll bet I can not fix it for less!

Hi Ron,

I put new brakes on a few weeks ago and they were to at that time also look at the throttle problem, they didn't get to it!

ARE we talking choke cable?

or are we talking throttle cable?

Either case, the cable is not that difficult to out and out replace. the inner cable has a tendancy over time to rust to the sheath, causing substantial issues. might be as simple as replacing the cable.

i have one a well on my '78. i cannot figure out how to properly secure it to the pedal assembly to make it function.

what that cable is supposed to do is act similar to a modern day cruise control, by pulling on the pedal assembly and holding the pedal at a selected distance from the floor, above idle.

Thanks to everyone for their imput, i hope this works. I took a picture and posted it to photobucket and put the url here, not sure if i am doing to correctly? Also Mark, i looked at the Vin plate on the Fiat and it's a 1975. It says Nov*75 so that is pretty late in the year, is it a 76 or a 75? Sorry for the poor quality photo's i took them with my Blackberry. Thanks again...

11/75 should be considerd a 76 model by US standards. Your carb should have an automatic choke, the knob marked throttle opens the throttle just like stepping on the gas pedal. Unless someone has swapped an earlier carb onto the intake and attached that cable to the choke

Hi Mark, Yes the Throttle opens the gas up just like stepping on the pedal. I thought at 1st it must act like a Choke but see now that it's actually a Throttle. This does stick, actually i'm not sure if its the cable or the actual throttle it's self that sticks. Anyone know how to correc this problem? I just checked my Canadian registration and it is registered as a 1976, the car came from Cali orginally.

Thanks again,

Shayne...

that "throttle" cable is supposed to stick. that way, if you use it properly, you can relax your accelerator foot occasionally.

my 1980 Spider was manufactured 10/79. musta taken the slow boat from Italy

I guess i didn't explain it very well, sorry. The Throttle sticks the RPM's are very high at times i have to give it a quick shot with my foot and it brings them down. I thought maybe it had something to do with the throttle cable but maybe it's just the throttle it's self? I always leave the throttle cable all the way in unless like you say i want to "rest" the ol' foot lol.
