Speedo cable will not release from drive

Doing an R&R on my manual transmission. 1984 model. Loosened the knurled ferrel from the drive but the cable refuses to come out. Anyone experienced this before? There was a lot of time spent trying to pull the cable out with some force but it is still stuck. What gives?? Any and all advice appreciated before I resort to wire cutters. Thanks!

Try rotating the rear wheels up in the air with a gear engaged and pulling on the cable at the same time.

Might need to grow some ten foot long arms for this. Or have someone help you, whichever is easier.
