Hello from California
As of almost 5 weeks ago, I’m the owner of a 1978 124 sport spider. I hope this won’t offend any purists, but my plan is to convert it to an EV.
I’ve had the itch to do an EV conversion for several years. I’m mostly interested in it as a challenging spare time project and chance to learn more about cars, as well as a project to work on with my kid. I’d done some small engine stuff when I was younger: motorcycles, go-karts, and the like, but this will definitely be a stretch for me. I’ve actually driven a production EV as my primary car for almost 6 years: first a LEAF, and now a Chevy Bolt. Although they may not look like much from the outside, they’re a lot of fun to drive because of their instantly responsive torque and low center of gravity.
Over the months of periodically browsing the classifieds for a car to convert, I found myself being drawn to 124s. The car I finally pulled the trigger on had a pretty clean body with not much rust. The engine seems to have been leaking oil for a while and wouldn’t keep oil pressure, the electronics were flaky, and it has the common issue where the crossmember mounts have broken through the frame rails. The interior is a bit ratty and could use some upgrading as well.

Since I’ve gotten the car, I’ve pulled the engine, fuel tank, and all ICE components, as well as the transmission. I disassembled the front suspension, and welded ⅛” steel plate reinforcements into the rails for the crossmember mounts. It’s been a lot of fun so far, and I have a long list of questions building up to ask.

Very good, I'm in Livermore, so not too far away. Let me know if you need any help with your project. While I have zero experience with electric vehicles, I have played around with Fiats for about 40 years now. Down to just two currently: a '69 spider and a '71 spider.

Thanks for asking! Steady progress. I've rebuilt the front end suspension, with a new crossmember, control arms, ball joints, and bushings. (The crossmember bolts and nut had been damaged when it broke away from the frame rail):

I also replaced the brake rotors and pads on the rear, as the pads were pretty worn and one of the rotors had a deep groove in the back (at some point in the past before I owned it, the caliper support bracket was bolted on without the spring washers that were normally there, which caused the bolts to stick through and gouge the back of the disc). Getting the pistons compressed by screwing them down was an enormous pain and I hope I never have to do that again.

I still need to replace the master cylinder, and reflare the brake lines (They seem to only have a single flare on the MC side, which probably explains why they were leaking)
I picked up a used LEAF motor from a junkyard and have been using Fusion 360 to mock up adapter plates to connect to the transmission, but it is a bit tricky given the shape of the motor. I also found a used Prius inverter and am looking into using one of these conversion boards and the Open Inverter software to adapt it to the motor: https://evbmw.com/index.php/evbmw-websh ... ted-boards.

Jeff, be aware that the Spiders use bubble flares on the brake lines. Not the double flares seen on North American vehicles. I have seen them described as unfinished double flares. Looking forward to following your progress.

Thanks! Yeah, that's something the manuals kind of gloss over. Fortunately I did find that on the forums here (which have been really helpful). Let's see how much brake line I go through up trying to do it correctly.
