Bolt hole mystery

Post by PaulRandall »

Can anyone please tell me what the 2 bolt holes are for? I'm reassembling a motor.

I'm talking about my 1980 Fiat Spider Fuel Injection
Front bottom of block
Passenger Side
Threaded
They go through the block to the inside of the crankcase

Thanks,
Paul

I was hoping someone more knowledgeable about the engines than I would answer.
I believe originally there was a stud in each of those holes for a bracket. There needs to be a bolt but preferably a stud in each opening to prevent the oil in the pan from leaking out. I think the AC compressor bracket might have used the original studs.

Thanks for the info. It makes sense that, for my car, nothing goes there.

Yes, Spider2081 is correct, those studs were for an optional AC system. So, nothing goes there, although the holes do have to "filled" with either a bolt or a stud to prevent oil from leaking out.
