Selling advice and asking price for 1980 Spider?

Post by HersheyPAGreg »

Hello, after 14 years of ownership I've decided to sell my 1980 Spider. I'm looking for advice on the best way to sell it. List it on this site? Bring a Trailer? I'm not very familiar with BaT, does anyone have any thoughts about that site? The huge Antique Automobile Club of America Fall Meet is another option and right in my backyard in Hershey, but it doesn't take place until October.

Also wondering if anyone would be willing to help me determine an asking price? I'd be glad to provide pictures and details about the car if anyone would be interested in helping there. I've seen the Hagerty estimates for Spiders but they seem high in my opinion? Obviously I'd like to get as much for the car as I can but I want to be realistic and price it to sell. The car runs well and has minimal rust, as I mentioned earlier I can give lots more information and provide photos if asked.

Thanks in advance.

Bring a Trailer seems to bring pretty good prices, but a lot depends on the presentation (photos) and engagement by the seller. Some people have received less than they expected, so I do suggest setting a reserve price (a hidden minimum that bidders must meet before the auction can conclude). Be sure you do your homework if you use BaT.

As for price? I'm not a good judge of this, but I suggest looking for "comps" on BaT, Craigslist, Ebay, Haggerty, etc. A nicely presented 1980 spider that runs well can bring up to $20,000 on BaT, but only if there are no issues. Craigslist and Ebay seem to bring less. A car with issues (paint, top, underbody not in good shape, rust, doesn't run well, etc) will not sell for as much.

By the way, I don't suggest selling only on this site. It doesn't hurt to list it of course, but there just isn't much traffic. You can also create an account with Mirafiori.com, which is a much more active site for Fiat spiders.

Good luck!

Bryan, thanks for the reply and advice. I'll check out the Mirafiori site as you suggested. It's too bad this site isn't as active as it used to be.

Agreed. It was before my time, but apparently there were some "disagreements" that caused a lot of people to abandon this site.

At any rate, I see you posted on Mirafiori, so let's see what advice you get.
