Post by PGUNN »

I have a 77 spider that has missing hoses and blows exaust gasses out of holes in a part mounted to the firewall. This part deosnt seem to have had hoses at these points in the past.Any help with theseissues would would be nice.I live in one of the most strict counties in CA as far as smog.so I have to have these systems working properly.Or the vehicle wont be on the road.

There shouldn't be exhaust gas in any external device. The diverter valve for the air pump mounts on the right fenderwell, and if there is exhaust in it then the check valve on the air injection rail has failed.

Hey I think you may have may have nailed it.Looking at the engine your answer total sense. So can it be fixed or need replaced. As your looking down at the part.It is mounted to a bracket welded to right fire wall.Where the hose from air injection rail goes into the top of it.There is a hole maybe about3/16.Right in front of where the large hose clamps onto it.Other hole is just to the left, but farther down on the same part.
No digital cam at the moment. So pics will take a little bit.
Lots of other things I could use some feedback on.I think my carb. is a 32.It had a water choke.I changed it to an electric from a different weber. It fit perfectly. Will this work properly?Or should I change it back.Istill have all of the water choke parts.
Need some parts also. Ignition sw.,trunk lock, door locks, front glass, tail light lens, rag top, shifter knob.Cant afford all at once, but have to get all these things eventually. Also have to re do or replace the dash.It is toast. If anyone has pics of a 77 engine w/o the air cleaner. So I can make sure all hoses are routed properly.I know I'm missing a couple.
What is the choke cable doing actuating the entire throttle. It seems to be attached to the throttle cable between the fire walls. Is this how it is designed?
Plenty more questions.I'll save them for now.Thank allya for your time.

I removed valve on fender well.Your right,it's toast.Out of curiosity I put the two hoses together and tried it.She fired right up,and idled just like a dream.Still I know this is not going to pass a smog test.So i'll have to find a valve somewhere. No luck with any parts anywhere near me.I've tried all autowreckers in area. Thanks for the help.Any feedback helps. So dont hesatate to jump in.As tou can imagine. Not many people nearby share an interest in this car.

that's not a choke cable poking through the firewall, it's a throttle cable. The elec choke is a good replacement for the water choke, and no smog techs will realize the carb has been swapped if the original air cleaner is in place. Rarely do the diverter valves fail, unless the check valve on the rail has failed. Then exhaust can get into the diverter valve and ruin it. Eventually it will ruin the air pump also

I dont think carb has been swapped.Like I said only 32000 miles.I tried a different weber, but it seemed to bakfire almost through the carb. Also I knew more about where hoses and such went for first ono.So I reinstalled it.After minor rebuild.

Here are several pics I took of a '76 engine bay. I'm thinking it may be similar to your '77. I can't be certain that all the hoses are correctly attached, but it ran great when I got it, so I assume that most of it was correct. The car has been parted out, so if you need any of these parts, feel free to contact me (805-338-1767, ventura_ace#juno.com).

As Mark mentioned, the pull cable is a manual throttle.

Ventura,
Thanks for the pics.I'll see if I can put them to use this weekend. So Cal tells me that you may have a diverter valve.I may be in need of one.If you have one what would it take to get you to part with it?

Yes, I have the carb, intake, exhaust manifolds, and all the smog related stuff for the engine ((1976). I think I know which part you are referring to. Give me a call, so I can be clear on exactly what you need, or e-mail me at ventura_ace@juno.com.

Ace,
Lets hold off on that valve.I found a 76 in a local wrecking yard today.I got the diverter valve
,an ig. sw.,and I'm going back for the windshield.Even has the original radio. Also got the door locks,no trunk lock though.
I still need some things you may have.Dash and console, shifter knob.seats.Maybe that valve just to have a back up.Right now though I want to grab all I can from this local spot.I think I'm the only one who has touched it in sometime.I know its not being advertised. The yard guy did'nt even remember it was there.Still get back at me with what you still have that I'm after. At this rate I may have her done before Christmas.
Thanks again PG

Ace,
I'm sure I'll find a need for it at some point.I fully intend to be driving this car when it turns it's 100,000th mile.I'll have that out to you by Friday afternoon.Whats the word on the dash and console? Are they available,or already sold?

Paul,
I sent you an e-mail Sunday morning, with attached pictures, to the hotmail.com address that you sent me. Did you not receive the e-mail? If not, maybe I have the address wrong, or I am being blocked by a spam blocker. E-mail me at ventura_ace@juno.com, and I will reply with the pics.

100k miles is a worthy goal. I like your attitude. My spider is well over 200K, and I've met a few that have over 300K. These cars are sturdy if you sevice them properly and take proper measures to prevent rust.
