First of all .Thanks Mark.Your advice is concise and easy to understand.
I HOPE i DIDDNT CAUSE HARM STARTING IT WITH VALVE BYPASSED. OOps damn caplock.
It ran better than it ever has.Only ran it for a minute.Sure wanted to take it around the block though.I've had it running ok in driveway.Good throttle response and range. On the road first gear ok get halfway through second or try to give it a little. It will start to sputter and bog out.If I only wanted to put around it would be alright.Light on the throttle it runs ok,but who wants to be light on the throttle.
So Cal I dont mean to sound like a smart a%&.Please dont take this as such.
My throttle cable is attached to my gas pedal. And works fine. The cable or wire I am asking about. Is on a knob at bottom of dash.Just above left knee.It extends straight forward through panel. But does not enter engine compartment.Knob has twist lock at all points of actuation range. When pulled out.It opens throttle about halfway, and holds it there. The only thing ive ever seen like this was the choke on my grandpas old ford. That one only controlled the choke flap.My thought was this would be something similar. Wish I had a decent book for this car.All Data is almost 0 help.Going to check out Mitchell on demand next week.I have great book for 77 dino. Anyone want to trade for 77 spider book?
I tested fender well mounted valve with a hand pump, and the diaphragm wont hold vacuum at all.A bunch of big chunks of what seemed to be carbon,or the remains of the diaphragm came out of larg hole where hose attached.Where can I get one, andwhat will it run aprox.
Again thanks for your input.I feel better about her than I have all summer.Wish i'd gotten here months ago.

the cable is a manual throttle lever, sort of a poor mans' cruise control. The diverter valve isn't too hard to source; I believe Ventura Ace has one and I probably have a used one I could sell.
As for the air injection, if you start the car with the hose removed from the air injection rail you should not get exhaust coming up through the valve. It's a one-way check valve. Make sure you have air coming from the air pump into the diverter valve.

I have air coming from pump.Unfortunately I also have air coming from check valve.Guess Ill have to replace both parts.
Which chevys had this part?Do you think I could pick&pull one?If its only 10.00 Ill just buy a new one. What do I ask the parts counter guy for?

air injection check valve. Most 60s-80s GM cars used the same valve
