13" performance tires

Post by brad131a4 »

I was looking for some tires for another car of mine and stumbled across some tires made by federal and they had some performance tires in the 175 60 13 , 185 60 13 , 195 60 13 and 205 60 13 range on a couple of different tires. Not to sure about the tires but they look like they are marketing them for the drifting seen. I know that they sell them at the local Les Schwab here in Redmond WA . The sales guy said that they were pretty good for the price.

Did I see something on TV about drifting? The cars were on what looked like an autocross course and they were sliding around the turns. That's how I ran my first Autocross a couple weeks ago with my old, hard Coopers! :D

Thats it Denise. It looks like a bunch of ralley guys decided to do it on the pavement instead of the dirty mountain roads. Its kind of funny as you would think that they invented something new it just looks like racing in the old days with hard skinny tires as Denise can attest to.

I hear it's the big thing for kids to modify their rides for this type of racing. What is there to modify? My car didn't even lean in the corners, just skated. Luckily, I didn't hit the cones or the cameraman!

Alot of it has to do with front end geometry and horsepower. They don't use hard compound tires but soft compound as they say they have better control of the slide with the softer compound. I've seen a few of the cars from some japanese magazine articles before it was big here and they used to do it for fun in the streets over in Tokyo late at night. Funny thing is the police would actually close off certain areas so that the public wouldn't get in their way. Like you would see that here ya right .

I saw a 175/50/13 on tirerack.com Sumitomo HT200. Any thoughts on that size? The sidewall diameter is a full 2" shorter than the regular 185/70/13, so I am a little concerned it would look a bit silly with the big open wheel wells, unlowered.

"Drifting" started off in japan as a night time thing to do with the ride you had just stolen, "just to see how far you can push it before it craps out"

Anyone doing that with a spider needs/ deserves a public execution, don't you think ?

I've seen these on a rabbit and they are very small not to sure if they would be to good for everyday driving but might not be to bad of a tire to autocross on. Other than worring about the rubber donut going I don't really see any problem with drifting a spider as they used to ralley them I think that they would do fairly well.

I forget who made them.. but I do remember running a 205/60/13 on my original spider. It was about the same diameter and they only fouled the front passengerside fender when I had one of my (very) heavy friends in the car with me and I hit a large bump in the road.
