Post by GOPAPA »

It's Raining cold rain here today and ,,yes I admit it I am staying in and playing on the computer.. So ,,just had to share this with you and ask if any one has taking their Spider on this water way by means of barge before.. Or even seen it in person ,,that would be something too.. any folks from Germany or close by from this forum that can say that they have floated down this spectacular travel by water idea ? It is the Elbe is't it ? LD from the wet hills of Oregon ..

I agree with you Mike ,,Lots of Money,,, the engineers also said that because of buoyancy they did not have to strengthen the supports of the structure ,,for any amount of weight any craft ,barge or ferry was loaded with .. I guess that comes under physics so thought I would ask you if this is true what they say.. good morning,,LOL ...LD

C'mon, Mike, you Great Lakers know all about inland waterways ...

One 27,500 barrel liquid barge = 46 rail cars = 144 trucks

Barges move one ton of cargo 576 miles per gallon of fuel; Rail = 413 miles; Truck = 155 miles

I'm not following the math Bernie. (truck moves one ton of cargo 155 miles per gallon of fuel) My truck is 3/4 ton and I get way less than 155 miles per gallon! ?
I'm confused.
Again.

They were part of the canal transportation system and many of these were bombed during the war disrupting the movement of coal.

Semi's, not pick-em-ups, Ron.
80,000 lbs. GVW
15,000# tractor
13,000# trailer
52,000# (26 ton) net
6 mpg = 155/miles/gal/ton

Bernie

ps your truck? .750 ton gross, 250# fuel and driver, 0.625 ton net. At 15 mpg, only 9 miles/ton/gallon. Illustrates how incredibly efficient modern semi-trucks are. If you really want to be amazed, run the numbers for an airliner.

Summagunn. Thanks Bernie, I knew there was an explanation, the math just wasn't working for me. Thanks for the education.
